Every few years, the industry points at a new frontman and asks everyone to believe. The more interesting story is why rock needs rescuing at all.

Rock has a strange habit of announcing its own saviours. The language changes, the haircut changes, but the anxiety is usually the same: is this still a living culture?

The industry loves a simple story. One artist, one face, one poster, one comeback narrative. Fans tend to be harder to convince, because they can hear the difference between danger and costume.

The healthier question is not who saves rock. It is whether scenes, venues, bands and audiences are being given enough room to make rock feel necessary again.
